World War 1 was different from other wars. WW1 was the start of trench warfare. Trenches are big tunnels infested with bugs and mud. Soldiers slept, ate, and used the bathroom in trenches. During the war, the use of poison gas and machine guns began. Air warfare became a new useful thing.
