Slave Clothing

Clothes were poorly made out of the cheapest material, which was ''Negro  Cloth''  during that time. Men were given a few shirts and pants. Some masters allowed slaves to have shoes.  The shoes were very cheap. Most of the shoes didn't last very long, if the shoes wore out you had to go barefooted.  The women wore dresses of a dull color.  Some women received shoes, they were the same as the men's.  Children were only given a shirt to wear until they were older.

The Negro Cloth was made out of feed bags.  Feed bags were made out burlap.  Burlap is a cloth made from jute and hemp.  The jute and hemp make burlap very coarse and hard.  The burlap makes the clothes rough and uncomfortable.  The clothes made working in the field very hard for a slave.
