Nat Turner

A Brief Biography

Nat Turner was  born on October 2, 1800 in Southampton County, Virginia.  When Nat Turner was young, he always told stories of events that had happened before his time. Because he was so intelligent, he began to  soon be known as a prophet and became very religious. Nat thought that he could have visions. He believed that god wanted him to end slavery in America. In Virginia in 1831, Turner led the bloodiest slave revolt in American history. Between fifty-seven and eighty-five people were killed.  Over 50 of the deaths were of whites and numerous blacks.

Nat Turner was captured on October 30, 1831.  On November 5th  of that same year, Turner was sent to court. Once in  court Nat was sentenced to death.  On November 11, 1831 Nat Turner was hung and skinned.

After Turner's death, close to 200 black people who  had nothing to do with the revolt were killed by white mobs.  To this day people still wonder if Nat was a Revolutionary hero or just another fanatic killer.  Who knows what really happened.  The story lies beneath many untold mysteries.
