The Writing Process

Click on the footprints to reveal the steps of the writing process and be on your way to writing better.  This guide will help 5th graders prepare for the state writing test.  Don’t miss a step!!

Prewriting

  • This is what you do before you write.  You must plan and organize your thoughts.  Begin thinking about how to hook your reader, how to express your thoughts completely, and how to wrap everything up in your conclusion.  Consider your audience. Plan at least a five paragraph paper.

First Draft

  • Take your ideas and put them into paragraph form.  Indent at the beginning of each new paragraph. We are not concerned with spelling or neatness at this point.

Revise/Edit

  • Think of ways to make your paper better. You might want to consider moving ideas and inserting more detailed information to make your ideas clear to the reader.  Add plenty of interesting, descriptive words. Consider using figurative language elements to appeal to all five senses.
  • Call the COPS!
    • COPS stands for
      • Capitalization
      • Organization
      • Punctuation
      • Spelling
    • Actually saying the words allows you to catch  more mistakes!

Final Copy

  • Rewrite your piece nicely and neatly including all corrections. Your writing is complete and ready to be shared.
