Characters
Luke Garner- A shadow child. He is twelve years old. He is a very sensitive and quiet boy, and is extremely introverted, because he hasn’t met a lot of people in his entire life. Luke doesn’t like being kept up inside when his family is away, and he doesn’t like being alone. Luke loves making his family happy, and all he wants to do is please them.
Jen Talbot- Another shadow child, 12 years old also. Jen is almost the complete opposite of Luke. She is loud, outspoken, and loves to argue about the government and what should be done about the shadow children. Jen thinks that nobody should be hidden, and wants to protest the population police. Jen is a tomboy
Population Police- The population police are government officials who make sure people aren’t hiding shadow children. The population law is strictly enforced by these people, and if they find hidden children, the penalty is death or 5 million dollars, depending on the mood of the judge.
Mr. Talbot- Jen’s dad, one of the population police. Mr. Talbot is very nice, and a lot like Jen. Luke and Mr. Talbot don’t meet until the very end of the story.
Mrs. Garner- Luke’s mom. She is very motherly, and loves taking care of Luke. She works at the factory to earn extra money for the family. Mrs. Garner had Luke just when the population law started, and having him was an accident. Mrs. Garner kept Luke because she had always wanted a big family.
Mr. Garner- Luke’s dad. Mr. Garner is a farmer. He only wants the best for Luke, so he gets angry at him a lot for looking out the window when he isn’t supposed to. He is very uptight about Luke, and thinks the government has all sorts of ways to find out if a shadow child is living in a house, like through the TV or phone.
Mathew- Luke’s brother. Mathew is the oldest, 15. Mathew helps his dad with the work, and goes to school. Luke is very jealous of him.
Mark- Luke’s other brother. He is 14, two years older than Luke. When Mark isn’t teasing Luke, he can be very nice. Mark also helps his dad with the work, and this also makes Luke jealous.
