Shield Volcano

A shield cone volcano is one type of volcano made up of layers of hardened lava creating a broad shape dome. It is built from many eruptions of magma creating lava flows over a large area.  Example: Mount Loa in Hawaii is one of the largest in the world.

 Cinder Cone Volcano

A cinder cone volcano is a very steep cone shaped hill developed by explosive eruptions of cinder, ash, dust, and rock particles that piles up  all around a single crater.  Cinder cone volcanoes have steep sides and narrow bases.  Example:
                                                                                              c,

Composite Volcano

A composite volcano is made of layers of lava and rock formed from a series of quiet, explosive eruptions eventually forming a very high, wide volcanic cone with steep sides.  Example:  Mount St. Helens in Washington state.
