Magma collects in the magma chamber.  Magma high in silica  does not flow easily causing gases to be trapped.  Pressure builds until a violent blast occurs.  Magma poor in silica flows easily.  The main gases in magma are water vapor and carbon dioxide.  Rock fragments are thrown into the air and can start fires where they land.
