Radium Springs? Is that
a part of a car? It certainly sounds like it would
be! On the contrary, it is actually one of the "Seven Natural Wonders
of Georgia". Radium Springs is the largest natural spring in the
state. It is located on the southeast outskirts of Albany in Dougherty
County.
This deep blue natural spring body of water was previously known as
"Blue Springs" and in 1925, after the discovery of trace amounts
of radium, the name was changed to "Radium Springs". These
deep blue waters flow into the
Flint River while keeping a constant temperature of 68 degrees year round.
Radium Springs even houses an elaborate underwater cavern system.
In the 1920s, a casino was built overlooking the springs and became a very
popular resort and spa. Many Northerners, on their way to Florida during
the winter months, would stop and visit because of the healthful benefits
of the radium element. The casino was greatly damaged by the flood of 1994
and was damaged even more by yet another great amount of rain in 1998. In
2003, the casino was demolished.
