During World War Two Hitler blamed the Jews for Germany’s
destruction during World War One. He convinced Germany that they were to blame for
all of their problems and that only the mass destruction of Jews would create
the perfect world. This was called the Final Solution. Nazis began rounding up
Jews and depositing them in Ghettos. These were enclosed, often cramped cities
for Jews. Here they were forced to live in miserable conditions; around 800 of
these were built during the course of the war. From ghettos, the Jews were
often moved to larger concentration camps, where the Nazis frequently worked
them to death. They were also forced to work in Nazi factories, making bullets
and guns for their army. This was called forced labor. From here many Jews were
evacuated to extermination camps (also referred to as death camps, or killing
centers). The main purpose of these camps was mass murder. Inhumane operations
were performed on Jews, anyone, including little children to grandparents,
could be a victim. Other common killing methods included gas chambers and
simply lining them up and shooting them. When these camps were liberated the
soldiers found huge holes in the ground brimming with bodies. However, this
wasn’t even half of it. Many bodies were thrown into huge bonfires to rid the
camps of evidence of the terrible things being done. Today, memories of this
terrible time are still fresh in many survivors’ minds. No one will ever be
able forget the terrible things that happened during the time of the holocaust.
