Weapons

Many different weapons were used during the pirate era. The following list is a list of the most used weapons:

Ø    Cutlass- The cutlass is a slightly curved sword, so it would be hard to knock it out of your hand. It was probably one of the most popular weapons used by pirates. Many pirates used this as a source to raid other people or pirates.

Ø    Dagger- The dagger was a small knife much like knifes today. Daggers were not only used for weapons, they were also used to cut food, trim ropes, gut fish, and other daily tasks.

Ø    Boarding axes- The boarding axe was like a tomahawk. It was used to climb up the sides of ships, or to cut through ropes and timber.

Ø    Cannons- The cannons were used to warn and scare their opponent. The pirates did not want to damage their prey. They only used the cannon when it had to be used.

Ø    Grenado- The grenado was an early form of the hand grenade. They were also called the powder flaks.

Although these were the main types of weapons used, but pirates could make do with just about anything.
