| | With our Social Studies
standards being the way they are, pirates are not directly related to our
curriculum. Still, we believe that they are an important part of our history. They
helped European Nations explore the Americas, practiced the same
governing principals as many of our Founding Fathers, and displayed pioneering
spirit exploring new territory and meeting new native people. They helped to
show our present day government how not to punish our criminals. Colonists and
pirates were also alike in emphasizing written laws, democratic representation
and due process. Also, they were some of the first people to create some of the
ship designs we use today. In addition to these things, we proved that some
myths about pirates were true, yet others were not. Lastly, they provide great
Halloween costumes for the youngsters in America! |
