In
the 1920’s, African Americans seeking a better jobs and educational opportunities
gathered in Harlem, an area in New York City. They came from the South and as far away as the
Caribbean
“The Harlem Renaissance” celebrate black culture and intellectual life. Poetry, fiction, drama, and
assays were written by black writers. Some of the well known names from
this era are Langston Hughes and W. E. B. Dubois.
The works of black artist, actors,
musicians, and composers became well-known. Their music, art, and writings
showed their racial pride and their desire for social and political
equality. Today, some of these names, like Louis Armstrong, Billie
Holiday, and Duke Ellington, are still easily recognized. Renaissance is
means rebirth in Latin.
