Religion in Colonial America

By Sarah

Religion was important in Colonial Times.  Here are some of the religions that the settlers had in Colonial America:

 The Puritans

The Puritans believed that you should build your house near your neighbor’s house so that you could watch them. They believed it was their job to watch every move you made.  No single person was welcome to a Puritan village unless a family took you in. Only married couples were allowed to own land.

In Puritan villages you were expected to act like an adult at the age of six or seven years old!  That meant that you had to get up and do your chores very early in the morning.

In Puritan villages, there was a simple little house made of wood, called, a meeting house.  You and your neighbors gathered there for a few hours to talk about your day, and the pastor would talk about how to be a good person.  You had to go to these meeting houses on Sundays and two days during the week.

Most Puritan families had at least four children. At least two of their children died.

It was a very hard life for the Puritans.  But, they did not think death was bad.  They thought living in the world was nice, but, nothing was as perfect as Heaven.

The Quakers

The Quakers were one of the most popular religions in Colonial America. A lot of the Quakers came to America so they could have religious freedom. William Penn was the leader of the Quakers.  Most Quakers despised the Puritans.  They thought that Puritans lived such boring lives.  Most of the Quakers settled in Pennsylvania because it was known for its religious freedom.

 The Jewish Religion

Many Jews came to America seeking religious freedom, also.  Some of them changed their last name to Williams, Johnson, and other popular last names.  They were afraid that they would be persecuted.  Most Jews settled in seaport towns. The Jewish people are credited for having brought the Liberty Bell over from England.

The Dunkard Religion

The Dunkard religion was created in 1723.  The people who were Dunkards were mostly German.  Most of them came to America because of persecution. There was much religious liberty in Pennsylvania. So a lot of Dunkards settled there. The Dunkards brought a lot of customs with them.  Including, washing feet as part of their religious service.

The Baptist Religion

During the 1750s, the Baptist Religion was successful in the southern colonies.  Poor farmers were usually part of the Baptist Congregation.  For the first time ever, slaves or African Americans were allowed to worship in there Baptist church.  Baptists were very strict at reading and teaching the Bible.

The Roman Catholics

The Catholics settled in Maryland.  John Calvert founded Maryland as a refuge for the Catholics. They were being persecuted. The Catholics lived hard lives until they came to America. They were able to have religious freedom in Maryland.
