Colonial Food

By: Lauren

Before there was a Burger King, in the 1700's when the U.S. was just 13 colonies, people cooked all their food and harvested it also. They had corn, pumpkins, squash, and other vegetables and fruit. They planted beans and trained them to grow up cornstalks. They had bean porridge, either hot or cold.

Men and boys fished, but not girls.  They also hunted rabbit, bear, wild pig, and deer. During the winter they worked very hard. Meat was salted and dried. The fruits and vegetables were hung.

The people in colonial times had not much variety to drink. They did not have cows for milk. They thought the water was not fresh to drink. They had cider made from apples, pears, and peaches. They also drank beer. Even the children drank beer!

Who cooked the food? The women always cooked the food. The men brought home the meat. The women gathered fruits and vegetables from their gardens. They baked bread and roasted pigs.
