Art in Colonial time

By Courtney

During the 1700's, Artisans traveled throughout the colonies and earned a living by painting pictures. Some people were Silver Smiths, Glass Makers, and detailed Needle Workers.

Silver Smithing was a leading craft in the early American colonies. Some cities had Silversmiths that made beautiful silver such as the sugar bowl, jewelry, and coins.

Glass making was invented in the American colonies during the middle 1700's. People who learned glass making techniques made there own glasses and household articles. Some worked in established glass factories and made other household items.

Detailed needle work was mostly produced by women. They would make blankets, carpet, and other cloth material. Furniture in the colonial times was heavy. But in the 1700’s furniture became lighter and more graceful. Some famous furniture makers were Thomas Chippendale, Thomas Sheraton, and George Hepplewhite.

Dancing in the colonial times was a hobby for men and women. The Virginia Reel Dance was introduced in 1685 By Sir Roger De Covertly. Before they danced, a nice meal would be served by the hostess. All the dances began with honors, a nice bow and a good curtsy. To do The Virginia Reel couples face each other forming two lines. Each line had a head couple and a foot couple. The head couple is closest to the music and the foot couple is at the other end of the line. Only six couples can participate at a time. They meet their partner going diagonally taking four steps, curtsey, and bow. Then they go four steps. The most important part of the dance was when one couple at a time would dance down the line toward the foot.

Music was another hobby in the colonial times. Some children would play the Violin and the French Horn. Some mothers did not want their children to play the Violin or the French horn because they did not want there children to bend their necks and put their mouth on a French horn to play. They wanted them to just grow up and be young men and women.

During the colonial times, men and women spent their day using their talents and abilities making many types of arts and crafts. Some of the crafts were just for fun but many of the crafts were used in their everyday life. They expressed themselves through music, art, dance and literature.
