The barrier islands of Georgia are nicknamed the Golden Isles. Some of the barrier islands are Ossabaw, Sapelo, and Cumberland. Crabs, oysters, and shrimp live in the waters around the islands.

One of the barrier islands is Sea Island. A special people live there. They are called the Gullah people. They are African-Americans who are descended from slaves who worked on the islands. They have their own language, which is combined English and West African. You can hear people speak this language on Sapelo Island. The Gullah people are farmers and fishermen. They also make special baskets out of island grass.

Turkeys, deer, and wild pigs live on Cumberland Island.

Pirates used to bury treasure on these islands. Blackbeard is one of the most famous pirates who visited the Sea Islands.
