Vocabulary

Binary compound- one that is composed of two elements.

Chemical bond-force that holds atoms together in a compound.

Chemical formula-tells what elements a compound contains and the exact number of the atoms of each element in a unit of that compound.

Chemically stable-describes an atom whose outer energy level is completely filled with all the electrons allowed in that level.

Covalent bond- the attraction that forms between atoms when they share electrons.

Electrons- a single or one of two or more electrons in the outer shell of an atom that is responsible for the properties of the atom.

hydrate- a compound that has water chemically attached to its ions.

Ion-a charged particle because it now has either more or fewer electrons than protons.

Ionic bond- the force of attraction between the opposite charges of the ions in an ionic compound.

Molecule- a neutral particle that forms as a result of electron sharing

Non polar molecule- one in which electrons is shared equally in bonds.

Oxidation number- positive or negative number that indicates how many electrons an atom has gained, lost, or shared to become stable.

Polar molecule-one that has a slightly negative end although the overall molecule is neutral.

Polyatomic Ion-a positively or negatively charged, covalently bonded group of atoms.
