The fifties arose as a time of individuality. Skirts were still very popular, as in the forties. However the styles of skirts of this decade were very different than the previous years. The most important feature to a woman was to wear a skirt that made her look slim and fit. The most popular type of skirt in the fifties was the “poodle skirt”. These skirts were made of unique materials and had different patterns on them, the most popular being a poodle, and were worn by all different women. The hemlines on these skirts were found just below the knee or longer.  Flowers, dots and swirls were also common designs.
As for pants, women only wore these on casual occasions. When they did wear pants, they were usually tight-fitting three-quarter length or rolled up pants. Also, the homemaker look was popular. This look was shown by wearing knee-length, tight-waisted dresses. This was a look popular with ladies who stayed at home during the day and helped run their families.
Men’s clothing was simpler and more conservative than women’s fashion. “Ivy League” college men wore suits and looked professional at every given chance. These men wore cardigan sweaters and dark colored suits. Also hats were a fitting accessory with this nice outfit.  In contrast, many high-school age boys were found wearing plain white t-shirts with the sleeves rolled up and blue jeans. Athletic boys would wear their letter jackets over their simple everyday outfits. An article of clothing, influenced by people in other countries, was the Bermuda shorts. Men wore these on more casual occasions.
The fifties was definitely a time of individuality and later had its influences on following decades. There were many different styles and fads during this time period, but they all were collectively remembered as the FABULOUS FIFTIES.
