The 1910s had a bit of the 1900s in it. The clothing for women was a little bit shorter than the 1900s. Corsets weren’t worn quite as often as in the 1900s. Also a well known fashion designer was born.
Gabrielle Chanel was born is The fabrics that the women’s clothing was made out of were brighter, lighter, and cooler than that of the 1900s. Fabrics were more expensive to make, so they had to resort to a different type of fabric. Evening gowns were made with a low-cut neck, a very long wedding dress like train, and a tight fitting bodice. Sometimes they had a sheer overlay that could have been embroidered with silk or thread to make floral designs or other decorative pieces. A low neckline was accented with sheer material and a ribbon added to the elegance. This was called an Empire Waist gown. Furs were a very popular item with the higher class society for winter (coats and muffs) and evening (stoles and shawls). Large hats with feathers, sheer material, flowers, and ribbons were very popular wear for ladies of the upper and middle classes. Long cloaks or coats were often used to keep warm in the winter months. They matched the color of the dress. Everything that was worn like: petticoats, stockings, dresses, hats, gloves, undergarments, it was all COVERED with lace. The men of the 1910s wore suits. The suits had a white shirt, suspenders, pants, and a matching overcoat. During the winter, a frock coat was worn. The frock coat went over the overcoat and it was usually made of wool. These fashions were similar to the 1900s, but they still had their own unique style. |
