Have you ever walked by a tree and saw the sap oozing from it? Could you imagine chewing on that sap? Well, that’s just what Mayans used to do. In 1869, bubble gum was discovered by the American Inventor Thomas Adams with the assistance of the Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. The discovery of gum as we know it today was a complete accident. General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna was looking for a rubber substitute when he happened upon chicle, the sap off a Sapodilla tree. He then contacted Thomas Adams.
Adams
was not able to make the sap work as a substitute for rubber, but he thought of using chicle as a gum base. Thus, the modern bubble gum was invented.
Adams
was the creator of the modern-day chewing gum named “Chiclets”. This “chicle” was quickly the most-selling gum in the
United States of America
. As much as chicle was a huge event, the addition of flavoring was an even bigger event. This addition was made by William J. White, a former popcorn salesman. However, the first commercial gum was made by John Bacon Curtis in 1848. This type of gum was sold in sticks. These sticks measured 1 cm by 2 cm. The name for this gum was “State of
Maine Pure Spruce Gum
”. By 1850, he had a huge company with more than 200 employees. Then, the addition of sugar to spruce gum produced the first sweet gum.
