Coca-Cola was created in
Atlanta

Georgia
on May 8, 1886. Dr. John Stith Pemberton, a former lieutenant colonel in the confederate states military. After retiring from the military he then moved to
Atlanta
, and became a successful pharmacist. He soon there after created the syrup used in coca-cola. After creating the new product Dr. John carried it in a jug down the street to his pharmacy. He then sold it as a fountain drink for five cents a glass. The new fountain drink soon became very popular with
Atlanta
citizens so Dr. John decided to start adverting the popular drink. It was then that Dr. Johns’ partner Frank M. Robinson decided that two Cs would look good in advertisement; he then suggested the now famous name Coca-Cola which was first advertised in the
Atlanta
Journal. Coca-Cola made its first appearance in
Chicago
at the World’s Fair. Coke was then placed on sale as a popular fountain drink, and during the first years it sold a total of about nine drinks a day. The first plant to open outside
Atlanta
opened in
Houston
,
Texas
. Dr. John gradually sold portions of his business to various partners. Shortly before his death in 1888 he sold the last remaining interest of Coca-Cola to Asa G. Candler who eventually bout more rights and occurred complete control of the Coca-Cola Company. Coke now has over 400 brands of dinks in over 200 countries, and is the largest manufacture and distributor of nonalcoholic drinks.
